Varicose veins can cause itching, pain, cramping, and discoloration. Spider veins are smaller and less severe than varicose veins. Varicose veins are more common in women than in men, although anyone can get them. Who is NOT a good candidate?

People with very dark or black skin are not good candidates due to a high risk of permanent pigment abnormalities. Anyone who has taken isotretinoin (Accutane) must wait a minimum of 12 months before undergoing vein treatment due to the severe risk of scarring. Patients who have a history of cold sores (oral herpes simplex infection) must take prophylactic anti-herpes medication (such as Acyclovir) before undergoing laser vascular treatment.

Laser vein treatment uses a laser to target veins beneath the surface of the skin. After heating, the vessel walls collapse and seal shut. The sealed vein is then broken down and absorbed by the body. While it is not guaranteed to treat every vessel, a majority of patients experience significant improvement several weeks after treatment.

It is important to avoid sunlight to the treatment area for at least 8 weeks after treatment. Keep the treatment areas covered with SPF30+ or clothing. Compression hose (20-30psi) should be worn continuously for 3-5 days. Exercise and hot showers or baths should be avoided for five days after treatment. Also, you should avoid any blood thinners (Aspirin, Alcohol) for five days after treatment.
